I first encountered Chiddy Bang in February 2009 when they were featured on one of my favourite music blogs, Pretty Much Amazing. I was intrigued by the name because it made me think of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (I adore musicals, especially ones with Dick van Dyke and/or Julie Andrews), so I gave their mixtape a listen and I was impressed. Since then, the band has steadily gained popularity, going from virtual underground unknowns to releasing top 40 singles, performing in Hyde Park, appearing in songs with Katy Perry and performing opening acts for Mike Posner.

A Brief History and Overview

It’s hard to put Chiddy Bang under a genre because they’re so diverse. I’d call them a fusion of Gym Class Heroes and Hadouken! and 3oh!3 and Asher Roth and Bloc Party. Wikipedia lists their genres as “alternative hip hop, grime, electronic, afrobeat, pop”. Their sound is based on the mixture of hip hop and unique sample choices from alternative artists such as Radiohead, Passion Pit and MGMT. I’ve always been a fan of rap/hip hop/alternative fusions, which is probably why I like them so much.

Chiddy Bang is the fairly new duo of Chidera Anamege and Noah Beresin, both only nineteen years of age. They’re college freshmen who started out by performing at various college basement parties all across Philadelphia. In February 2009, they released their mixtape, “The Swelly Express”, showcasing their unique style. The mixtape was a success, mainly because of the single “Opposite of Adults”. The track debuted at #11 on the British charts.

In just one month, the mixtape logged an impressive 100,000 downloads. It was featured in an article by Blackbook Magazine (Three Mixtapes You Must Own). A record deal with Virgin Records came soon after, transforming the boys from Philly to international stars. They’ve toured Europe and they’re heading back to the States for Lollapalooza, a music festival taking place in August.
